I know I barely updated this site this summer but I promise I'll update it more regularly now that school's started. I recently moved into a dorm at sdsu so it's a little different trying to outfit photos quickly while roommate is out. This is what I wore to my first day of classes. I can't wait till winter because I've realized that I have adjust my outfits for the heat + the fact that I have to walk 15-20 min to get to class. I usually hate winter, but right now I can't see anything better than a big jumper and leggings and scarf.

Not a true outfit post, since I just threw this on and lounged around in it for a couple hours before changed back into something more comfortable. I tend to spend most of my summer indoors, and when I actually do get out of the house I never get any outfit photos. I often wonder how other bloggers do it - have pictures of themselves everyday outside with quality photos. I would love to do that but I don't have anyone to take pictures of me and I couldn't imagine lugging my trippod outside and using a self timer in public. I imagine people looking at me like I'm some weirdo and wondering what I'm doing. I often preach not to worry about what other people think but I can't imagine the embarrassment I would feel if someone caught me taking pictures of myself. Even in my home I lock the doors and make sure no knows what I'm doing. Hmm.

DIY tanktop dress

Super easy project! Take a tanktop and an overized shirt, cut the tanktop where you want it to end on your body (waist level), cut the oversized shirt under the arms. Pair them together, flip inside out and sew the tank and shirt together. You might have to make little pleats in the shirt if it's bigger than your tank. Once you sew it together you're done! You can add an outer elastic or wear it with a belt like I will. Easy peasy!

diy reversible skirt - from two shirts

A couple people on Tumblr asked me to make a tutorial for turning a shirt into a skirt. I was gonna do a simple tutorial but then I figured I would make a reversible skirt that you could wear two ways.

Materials: two shirts that would fit well as skirts (try and pull them on as shirts and see how they would fit as bottoms), needle&thread or a sewing machine, elastic

1. Cut the top of the shirts off at the arms.
2. Place the one of the colors "inside" the other one so that it's reversible
** Now this is where I messed up. Originally I sewed a straight hem about an inch down from the top and then sewed another hem at the very top of the skirt so that there was a tunnel where I could stick my elastic. The only problem was that the top hem was tight and basically countered the job of the elastic and when I pulled it on the top hem broke so I had to start over and then I ended up with this:
3. Pick a color that you think you'll wear more (for me it was the green side) and fold the top inside about an inch and sew all around. It sounds confusing but it's not, just fold down and sew, so that it creates a little tunnel that your elastic can go through. (See Picture #5 - on the green side it doesn't show because it's folded in but on the purple side you can see where the green was folded)
4. After you sew all around the hem to create the tunnel, make/cut an opening to stick your elastic through. Because my sewing was shitty I accidentally missed a spot which kinda made a hole itself that I stuck the elastic through
5. Push your elastic through the whole skirt and then sew it together and sew your hole shut.
6. Sew the bottom of the skirt so that the two shirts are sewn on together and wont separate.
7. That's it!

originally black cowboy boots that I never wore. Cut off the top to make it just a straight boot but I still never wore it, so I added studs in hopes of actually wearing the shoes out of the house, which I'm sure I'll do now.

I still have a couple of studs left over but I think I'll just save them instead of using them all. I think I'll order some silver studs next time and stud some shorts.

This blazer is huge and I didn't want to buy it but my cousin convinced me, this is actually my first time wearing it and it's been sitting in my closet for a while. I didn't even want to wear it but it was the first thing I grabbed as I was rushing out of the house when I figured out it was sprinkling. I don't know I think it fits really weird, it's a size 14. I love the gold button but I think I might have to pair it with something different to see if I actually like it.

My laptop is fixed and running again, so I should be back to my normal postings! So I was all for the 30 for 30 I really was, and I really tried. But then I got sick for like 3 days and stayed in pjs all day and then I just had a sudden urge to wear something that wasn't on my 30 list. So I cheated. I wore something outside of my 30 for 30 outfit list and then I was gonna allow that to slide but I stepped into a thrift store and I couldn't help up break another rule and I bought a fabulous silk shirt for $4. It was $4!! I couldn't not buy it, right? That would be insane. So I broke a couple rules and then it all went downhill from there. Sooooooo....I have failed the 30 for 30 challenge and I have given up. Because I am a quitter. BUT it's ok because I am more in love with my closet after limiting myself to certain clothes. Anyway! Here are some outfits from the last week:

I think one of the biggest motivators for doing this challenge is to actually get dressed. As much as I love fashion, I spend most of my time in sleeping clothes. This semester I've barely been in school. I have school monday - wednesday and half the time its for no more than a couple hours. Most of the time I throw something quick on and then sink back into pjs as soon as I get home from school. This challenge is actually forcing me to get dressed even when I know I'm gonna send the day at home.

- I didn't go anywhere this day but I spent the day playing with my scarf and trying to figure out different ways it can be worn and it can be worn a TON of different ways.

outfit #8 : altered off the should sweater, jeans, Charlotte Russe over the knee boots.

- This is one of those "throw something on because you only have one class for the day" outfits. I want to try to make my outfits fabulous everyday, but I am very lazy

outfit #9 : thrifted blazer, cheetah scarf, gray tank, black leggings, lace up boots

- I lounged around the house saturday in the tank and leggings and threw on the scarf and blazer for dinner. I hate how the outfit looks in these pictures. I swear it looked a lot better in person hahaha

outfit #10 : thrifted blouse, gray tank, angl belt, wet seal skirt, forever21 ankle boots, thrifted purse

- I LOVE this outfit. Funny this is, I spent like an hour trying to figure out what to wear and I almost was about to quit and give myself a "cheat day"so I could wear one of my non 30 for 30 clothes but somehow this just came together. It was suer comfortable and this is one of my favorite skirts of all time. I think it was like $10 at wet seal. I hardely ever wear it but when I do, I love it.

So its no secret that I love this button up tank, but I never realized how much I wear it until I looked back at these pictures. I didn't even noticed when I was getting dressed that out of six days, I've worn this tank three times. It's just so easy to put on. But ow I've crossed it off my 30 for 30 list for now so I don't wear it again hahaha, These outfits are really casual, stuff I usually wear to school exept that I only went to school once this week (wearing the last outfit) because I am a lazy college student. The other outfts were worn lounging around the house.

30 for 30: days 1-3

If you follow my tumblr you know that my laptop isn't working which is why I haven't posted any 30 for 30 outfits. But I have been taking pictures everyday so don't worry! These are my first three outfits and I actually love each of them a lot.

Outfit#1 - black button up tank from a small boutique, high waisted shorts (thrifted)
Outfit#2 - Slouchy gray shirt from a small boutique, orange maxi dress (thrifted) ANGL belt
Outfit#3 - black blazer (thrifted), green dress (thrifted), black tights, boots from my mom's closet

This outfit was sooo comfy. Like I literally wanted to prance around in it all day. I love high wasited shorts. I feel like they hide your whole stomach. Of course my sister pointed out that my butt looks super weird in them, oh well!

This outfit looked a lot better in person. And I loooooooove it. The dress is a strapless maxi dress that I thrifted for like $2? Super steal. I actually bought it with the intention of cutting it into a short mini dress but then the whole maxi skirt/dress trend came around and I decied to try it out as is. And now I want to buy every maxi dress I see. It's sooo comfortable! I felt so breezy and bohemian, it was great.

I really liked this outfit as well - another outfit that I think looks better in person. I wear this thrifted blazer all the time but this is actually the first time I wore this dress. Like the previous outfit, I bought this dress with the intention of altering it into a shorter dress but I actually like the length that it's at. With a belt I can make it a little shorter anyway. What I don't like this the neckline and the sleeves but with a blaxer you can't even tell. I'm also wearing heeled boots which I loved. I rarely ever wear heels because I'm 5'7 already but I love towering over people so I stole them from my mom's closet and declared them mine. Gonna try to wear them more often so that I can actually get used to it and not be stumbling around like an idiot. Also wore my hair in a fish tail braid (:

spring break update.

this past week I've been busy "enjoying" spring break. It's been so complicated and hectic and amazing and horrible all at the same time. I'm definitely emotionally drained. I took a roadtrip to San Luis Obispo with my best friend who goes to school at Cal Poly and stayed there for some time. I haven't really had time to make an OOTD posts or anything like that because I've been so busy.

I finally arrived home last night to see that my laptop was messing up, I've got it to the point now that I can go on the internet at a very dinosaur pace and I kind find a way to system restore my computer the way it needs to be. Which really sucks. Anyway, I haven't forgotted about my 30 for 30 challenge and I have taken pictures of both yesrterday and today's outfit. Unfortunetly I can't upload the pictures because my computer freeezes everytime I try to but hopefully it'll be up soon!

Also...I didn't realize how hard it was gonna be not to spend any shopping money for 30 days. Day two and I already had to tear myself away from the stores. Sigh :/

I decided for the month of April that I would take part in a challenge that I saw on Kendi Every Day. For me, I'm using this challenge as a way to wear some of the clothes I don't usually wear. I have a lot of items sitting in my closet that I like but never wear - so I've added them to my list for April and I'll try to find different ways to wear them.So for 30 days, I'll only wear outfits consisting of these items. It's definitely gonna be a challenge, but that's the fun part. I didn't include shoes, basics, or accessories in the list. It was really hard to not put in my favorite clothes but I wanted to really challenge myself to wear clothes that I usually don't and put them to good use. So starting April 1st I'll be documenting all my different outfit combinations on this site as well as my tumblr. Hopefully it works out!

Simple hanes shirt - I never wear it except to bed and I have three others exactly like it. I saw this project and knew I wanted to do it. I was gonna do it exactly like the above project, but then I decided to kinda make it my own and I'm glad I did, I like it alot.

Materials:
- a old shirt
- fabric paint & paintbrush
- tape
- freezer paper
- cardboard

1. Make a design and draw it on paper. You have to lay it out with the tape so that takes some planning.
2. I used freezer paper for my heart design but you can use whatever you want.
3. Tape/ Iron the tape and freezer paper to the shirt. Make sure there isn't bubbles and that it's set up perfectly.
4. Paint it and then let it dry or if you're impatient like me - blow dry it.
5. Peel the tape off and enjoy! This project is really easy it's just kinda tedious.

Even though it's easy you should do it when you have a lot of time so you can really pay attention. I was half assing it which it why there's a couple of spots on the shirt that bled through.

Rose Parade Pictures

On New Year's Day I performed at the Rose Parade in Pasedena, CA. It was absolutely FREEZING but it didn't rain so that's always good but I had a real good time. The six miles actually goes by pretty fast when your dancing and waving at people. The float was made by Dole and it actually won the Sweepstakes award which the best award you can get in the whole parade which is pretty amazing seeing as this was Dole's first year in the parade. It was a great experience but I'm not sure if I would do it again!

So over the weekend my church was having a thrift store sale to get rid of all their inventory. Initially everything was $2 but then they lowered it later in the day. I was amazed at all the stuff I found! I don't know if people weren't looking or I was just getting lucky because I found a decent amount of clothes that were absolute steals at only $1. I had to DIY alot of the clothes to alter them to fit me.

I've barely been posting on this website and I don't know why, lack of motivation and ideas probably. But I wanna make a solid effort to post more. So here are some pictures from my latest DIY.

I took a simple tanktop that I hardly ever wore and turned it into a skirt. I actually don't think i've worn the tanktop at all actually, it's just been sitting in my closet for ages. I'm sooo glad I did this.

I though that it fit really weird, and it hugged all the wrong spots so I got some scissors and went to work. I cut straight across the top where the armpit ends and thenI tried it on to see how it fit. After that I hemmed the edge and put it on, and that's it! it's really super super easy.

Step One) cut the straps off in a staight line

Step Two) hem the edge

that's all!

It's rediculously easy - I'll probably end up with 15 more skirts and no more tanktops.

This past week and half have left me more busy than usual which, I love. I really enjoy having a full schedule and actually having things to do. Unfortunately they weren't really bloggable things. Pictures of the beach get a little redundant after a while. Beach & laker games were on a constant rotation all last week. Yesterday I finally had a day to rest and today I was right back up again, kayaking with some friends :)

Its when you really wanna wear something that you realize your closet doesn't suffice for your wardobe dreams. In hopes of going for a nautical themed outfit, I grabbed my khaki shorts and then realized I did not own a single piece of striped clothing. What?? Seriously. I think it was that old "horizontal stripes are unflattering" thing that kept me from buying them. But now I really want a blue and white nautical jacket. That would be nice. But I do still have love for my $10 zebra tank :)

MTV Movie Awards 2010

This past weekend was the MTV movie awards. There was a lot of cute dresses - and a lot of disasters. In my opinion at least hahaha. Whenever I'm analyzing red carpet style I always seem to categorize the outfits. This year, it was: Gimme that Dress, Eh: It's Nice, Your really Boring me, Please Take it Off, and WTF?!?

GIMME THAT DRESS!
I love the bright summer-y dresses that were on the red carpet this year. The colors were BRIGHT and it looked really good. From the lists that I saw most of these people made the best dressed list and with good reason.

1. Whitney Port (the city): I loved everything about this outfit, head to toe. Love the neon yellow splotches of color on the nude base and I really loved the design.
2. Victoria Justice (victorious): Not gonna lie, I've loved Victoria Justice ever since she was on Zoey 101 with Britney Spear's little sister. And not gonna lie again, I love victorious. Who cares if its on Nickelodeon? That show is hilarious. You know what else I love? Her outfit. Bright colors, nude shoes? Loves it.
3. Stephanie Pratt (the hills): I don't watch the hills so I don't really know too much about her but I do know that I thought she was THE BEST DRESSED OF THE NIGHT. How can you not like her dress? I love it, alot. It has neon colors and lace that wraps around and doesn't make a whole lot of sense but I think it works and I would steal it off of her if I had the chance.
4. Anna Kendrick (up in the air): Honestly I always mix this girl up with Ashley Greene from Twilight. And I was like wait, this girl isn't the one from Twilight....and then I looked it up and she IS in Twilight too, soo I'm really confused....but anyway her outfit was perfect. Summery, short, flirty. I really liked her shoes too.
5. Lilly Collins (the blind side): To be honest, I didn't know who she was either until I looked her up and then I found out she was the super pretty girl in the blind side. I didn't love her dress as much as the others because it's pretty simple but I put it on the list because it goes with the bright color theme and I would just like to say that I would love some nail polish in that color.

EH; IT'S NICE
This category is pretty much outfits that I liked but didn't absolutely love. There still dresses that I would want, but maybe not as much as the one's in the category above. While in the "gimme that dress" category I think the dress made the person, in this category I think the people made the outfit.

1. Julianne Hough (singer): Her dress was pretty and simple. I loved the cutout detail but I really really love the bag which is probably why I put it on this list.
2. Amber Landcaster (the hard times of RJ Berger): I don't know who this girl but she is gorgeous. I'm pretty sure she could be wearing anything and make it work, which is why she's in this category. I really do like this dress though, it's actually something that I could see someone wearing in everyday life.
3. Scarlett Johansson (iron man 2): I love scarlett, she's soo pretty and she has the best curves. I like the color of the dress and she looks fine but something felt missing for me, maybe it was the way the dress hung, I don't think it was the most flattering dress or maybe it's her akward posing? I don't know
4. Paris Hilton (famous for being famous): I really don't like Paris, I don't even know why she's still relevant and her voice annoys me but I honestly do like this dress. I like how she can have the whole feather thing going on and not go completely over board with it.
5. Kristen Steward (twilight): Ok, I like this...but I probably wouldn't wear it. Let's just be honest she's only on this list because everything she usually wears is crap and I feel like this is a vast improvement. Plus her hair is.... in a ponytail? Which I like alot better then her short/boyish look

YOUR REALLY BORING ME
This category is pretty much outfits that I thought were just uneventful. You might not agree with me, but I was just really bored with these outfits for some reason.

1. Shailene Woodley (secret life of the american teenager): I thought her dress was really boring, the only thing I liked was her hair. Following the side braid trend, she had a messy fish tail braid, which if you read my blog you know I wear fish tail braid's all the time.
2. Adriana Patridge (the hills): I don't like her. I don't like her shoes. I also didn't really like her half shoulder/half tank top thing.
3. Eva Mendes (hitch?): I don't really know what she' sbeen in recently, but I like her. I like the design and color of her dress but the whole thing together bored me. I think it's her hair, her hair makes me want to fall asleep.
4. Vanessa Hudgens (high school musical): I LOOVE vanessa. I think she's so gorgeous and I usually love everything she wears. I just think I've seen this type of dress on her before. She always goes for the short flirty dresses, which I usually love but honestly, she just bored me.
5. Nikki Reed (twilight): This dress don't look like something for the red carpet. I don't like it. At All.

PLEASE TAKE THAT OFF
These dresses are one's that I thought were the worst on the red carpet. I'm not even gonna take the time to go over all of them individually because I hate them that much. Samantha Harris' hair is just way to big. Lauren Bosworth looks likes she's wearing a prom dress. I just hate everything related to the Jersey Shore so that's why that Angelina girl is on here. And the colors on Miranda Cosgrove's dress were not working out for me at all.

I find it kinda funny that this is the biggest category. I know the MTV awards are like the 'take risky choices' type instead of the fashion forward red carpet but man, I don't even have words for most of these outfits. Uh, I don't even wanna analyze all of these, and do they really need explaining? I think not

The Gossip Girl Season finale was a couple of weeks ago, but I just got caught up a couple of days ago. I remember watching the whole season and thinking, "Damn, I would kill to have that outfit!" whenever I saw Serena van der Woodson. Of course I would have to have Blake Lively's body for that, which is definitely not happening! Anyway, there are so many great Serena outfits I just wished I had thought of actually keeping a file for her outfits earlier, because now I can't remember where I saw what outfit hahaha.

One of my favorite things about Serena's wardobe is her formal wear. Her dresses are insane, and I wish I had more pictures. Another thing I like is that all her clothes are really form-fitting and they show off her figure. For some reason, I think I indetify with her closet more than Blair's. Everyone talks about how great Blair's clothes are, but I can't honestly see myself wearing any of her stuff in the real world. Maybe it's just me, but it's a little to prep school for my taste. Although you can't argue that she is the queen of headbands.

I'm a huge fan of the internet - obviously. Who isn't? And if your reading this, then you probably are too. One of the things I enjoy most about the internet is finding really good undiscovered non-popular websites that are actually really really useful. I thought I would compile of a list of some of my favorites to share with you. Some may have seen them, some may have not, either way enjoy!

1. Day Zero

I put Day Zero at the top of my list, not only because it's one of the best websites I've found in a while but a lot of the other websites I'll put on here have to do with some of my goals that came from the day zero project. Basically, this interactive project is a task-keeping site where you set realistic goals with a realistic timeline. You have 1001 days to complete 101 goals. As someone that is doing this, I'd say its actually a fair about of time. I've completed 25 goals and I'm coming up on my first year in about a month. On top of that, this site gives you so many goal options if you ever get stuck trying to come up with 101 tasks.

2. WordBoner

Word Boner is a hilarious website that turned from a typography Tumblr page to a full on store promoting their hilarious tee shirts. Their play on words and interesting quotes keep me coming back for more. Check out their archive to see all of the images. Starting from Feb 2009 there are literally hundreds of images to look at. But with 50,000 followers, you've probably already heard of them!

3. My BF Closet

I love DIY's so when I stumbled upon "My Boyfriend's Closet" I was in love. My only complaint is that updates are sporadic, but just going through the archive alone made me super happy. Taking clothes from their boyfriends, fathers, and brothers these girls turn boyish grunge into chic DIY projects. They also appreciate the fashion trend of turning menswear into womenwear. Turning your boyfriend's thermal into a super cute cardigan? Yes pleaseee!

4. Freerice

This is one of things that was on my goal list from Day Zero. Freerice is an online website that last you donate rice through the World Food Programme: for free! All you have do is know your vocabulary. Through a little bit of trivia, every answer you get right you donate 10 grains of rice. Continusous playing not only helps people in need, but will definitely improve your vocabulary. If English isn't your favorite subject, there's also Math, French, Spanish, Chemistry, Geography and more. So no matter what your gaining knowledge and help end world hunger by feeding people in need. It's a win-win situation and well worth it!

5. Swaptree

Here's another website that hails from my Day Zero list. Wanting to get rid of some my clutter, I immediately went to the internet. But seriously, no one wants to buy my old Gossip Girl books, and if they did I doubt I would make a profit after shipping costs plus time and effort. So when I found swaptree I was relieved. It's a simple process: you post what stuff your willing to part with, make a list of things you wouldn't mind having and before you know it someone wants to trade you that Gossip Girl collection for the newest book you've had your eye one. Although you can trade DVDS, games, and music all I've ever traded was books. But nevertheless, I shipped my books and happily jumped up and down as I received a new book in the mail, for free. The internet is great isn't it?

6. 1000 awesome things

There's always something to be thankful for and if you haven't checked out 1000 awesome things, you need to! With a list of awesome things you can find in daily life its an instant source of inspiration. From "walking into class and seeing a substitute teacher" to "when it suddenly just clicks". This site has the ability to make you want to make your own list of awesome things

I have a ton of things to do and to say, my mind is so cluttered! First, I love this blog and I really want to make it super great. If you've been following my posts you know that my birthday is coming up (May 23rd!) and that I blogged about wanting a new camera for my 18th so that I could take super fabulous pictures and what not :D So anyway, the other day my mom got a package in the mail and started opening it in front of me with out realizing what it was. Well lucky for me, I got a quick look and saw a Canon label! Now, I don't know specifically what camera it is, because once my mother realized what was in the box she took off running with it. But I am soo soo happy!

To be honest I haven't been to the mall in a while, so I was really surprised to see a new store called Love Culture there. So of course, I had to go in, they had a DJ playing some really good party music and tons and tons of cute stuff. New favorite store? Maybe!

They were even selling masquarade masks! I have never in my life seen anyone selling these at a clothing chain store. And they were only $7-13! It made me want to throw a masquerade ball so bad.

And I got this super cute ring for my friend for only $4. Score!

I've also been on a mission to try to learn how to wear heels, because I really really suck at walking with heels. I'm already 5'7 but I like towering over people so I was super happy when my mom decided to give me an early bday present and buy me a pair of heels from Seychelles.

They're really comfy - well, not really for me because I kept constantly tripping, but I'm sure once I get the hang of actually walking right, they'll be much more comfortable. I love the suede, and it makes my legs look soo long. Anyone have tips for learning how to actually walk right in heels?

DIY stencil shirt!

So I was talking to my mom today and she was telling me how she wanted shirts for her and her friends for an event in the summer, and I suddenly remembered all the freezer paper stenciling DIY's I've seen on blogs recently. So never missing an opportunity to make a quick buck, I offered to make some. But I wanted to test my skills first to practice, and ended up with this:

I looove it. And I'm definitely gonna wear it to school tomorrow, for a practice run I expected it to be a complete fail, and it really wasn't! Here's what you need if you wanna do this:
MATERIALS:
- contact paper
- sharpie
- scissors, x-acto knife
- shirt

I did my shirt a little differently then the freezer paper/paint/ironing tutorials because I didn't have any of those on hand and this was intended for practice. All I basically did was print out a quote on an 8.5 x 11 paper and taped contact paper over it and traced. Then I used the contact paper to adhere to my shirt and I colored in the blank spots with a black sharpie, peeled off the contact paper, and there you go!!! It was really really easy and I'm eager to try it again but with freezer paper and paint and hopefully get even better results.

So I definitely wanted to do an outfit post today, but I can't get my camera to ever get a good angle! And I really really hate my camera. BUT! It's May! and there's 22 more days till my 18th birthday and I'm PRAYING that I get a new camera, I've been hinting up and down for months. Anyway, I took a couple random pics today to post:

rings! I made a couple of these with my new ring blanks.

Hummus! And bread for breakfast. The price of my new skirt I bought yesterday, Normally I wouldn't buy this actually, but I had a gift card so I splurged. Yes, that's a splurge for me! I might even return it because it's a little too big. Large was the only size they had left.

I just made this ring gluing an old bracelet piece to a ring blank. Super easy! It's REALLLY heavy though.

I spend FOUR (yes, four!) hours at church today going through a membership class. I'm glad I did it but four hours is a long time to sit listening to a preacher! hahaha

Unfortunately, that's all I have for today. I can't wait for the day I get a good camera so that I can actually talk amazing blog-worthy pictures!

DIY - colorful wall

I have been trying to find inspiration for the couple of weeks and nothing hit me hard. UNTIL, I spotted the most amazing person with the most amazing blog. I spent hours going through every single post on Color Me Katie and I left feeling so inspired it was ridiculous. So I immediately got to work. And this is what my inspiration turned into:

This honestly doesn't need a DIY, cuz its pretty self explanatory, but I'll but one anyway.
Materials:
- cardstock or cardboard paper in different colors
- tape or adhesive tabs
- scissors, time, an empty wall
- and a quote you love!

My wall was looking a little blank, and I wanted something to look at while I was laying in bed. And thought to myself that I needed a quote that would motivate me get OUT of bed and go do something.
1. Find a quote. Mine was: There are 86,400 seconds in a day to turn it all around or to throw it all away.
2. I counted how much letters there were for every letter in my quote for example, I needed 8A's and 4N's.
3. Gather different colored cardboard paper and cut out your all your letters. Arrange them on a blank space as you go, switching colors to make sure the same colors aren't next to each other.
4. Once you have all your letters cut out space them out on your wall. NOTE: my quote is huge and it took a lot of rearranging to get the quote to be evenly spaced out.
5. Tape! Tape em all down, and then your done!

Its a super super easy project and I love my new wall.

HAPPY EARTH DAY :D
Let's be honest I didn't actually celebrate Earth day, how do you even celebrate it? But I did make a cute green hair clip. I made it out of extra fabric I had from an old shirt, it was super easy. I basically just used the same steps from my DIY bow tie ring. I just adjusted the size to be a little larger. Speaking of rings! I recently ordered some adjustable ring blanks from GSboutique on Etsy, and they came in the mail today!

They were a little smaller then I expected them to be, but that was my fault because I was focused on whatever was the cheapest price! For 12 ring blanks it came out to only $4 and as you can (slightly) see in the last picture, I was so surprised to find an extra bag that said "a free gift for you. thank you. GS Boutique". How cute is that? So in all, I got 14 ring blanks that came out to about $0.30 each. Score! Now I just need to figure out what to put on the ring blanks!

two new headbands

I wanted to show two new headbands that I made...mostly because I straightened my hair for the first time in a while. Big deal? For me: YES! It literally, and I'm not kidding, takes a complete hour to straighten my hair. Insane, I know. It used to take about an hour and 45 minutes but I've gotten a better straightener and quicker skills since then. I have a TON of hair and its really really long and thick so that's why it takes so long. But anyway! Here are some of the projects I've completed this week:

The first hair accessory was made my using this tutorial and put a backing on it so that it can be slipped into a headband, or be taken out an worn with a bobby pin or as a brooch or whatever :D The Second head band was made from black and yellow ribbon braided together with three strips of thin maroon ribbon that I braided first before I braided all of them together. The last couple of photos are (half) of the outfit I wore today. Disregard the giant white tee I throw on as soon as I got home from school. I wanted to post some pictures of my knee high socks/boots combo because it got ALOT of comments today, with mixed reviews and I wanted to see what you guys thought. Some people like it and others were like "woah I've never seen that before". It's my first time wearing something like this and I personally LOVED it. For some reason, sunny southern California doesn't want to be sunny and it was extremely cold and really windy today, so this kept my legs are feet extremely warm, my top half was freezing, but that's another issue :D

DIY - wall quote art

Now I know some of you may look at this at be like, art? No way! Well, I use the term loosely, but trust me if you do this project it'll end up turning out a lot better than mine did. Unfortunely I didn't have a tutorial to follow and I just kind of winged it, so it took a lot of trial and errors. Mostly error :D But that's alright.

Materials:
- a pizza box, cereal box, or just a piece of cardboard
- scissors and/or X-acto knife
- can of spray paint
- contact paper
- a printable font set
- an amazing quote that you love

I used clear transparent contact paper so it was easier to trace (like was like $4 from CVS), I also used purple Krylon spray paint, and it shows a cereal box here but I had to switch to a pizza box later because the cereal box was too small for my quote, and I used Elsie's font embroidery pattern to trace my letters from.

Whether your using a cereal box or a pizza box, or any other type of box (remember for my final piece I used a pizza box not the cereal box you see in the picture) and cut it in half all around so that you have two separate cardboard halves.

Cut the excess sides off ONE of the pieces so that it's a flat piece of cardboard. Later the cardboard will slide into the other piece creating a reverse canvas-type holder :D

Get your printed font set and use the clear contact paper to trace the letters you want for your quote. My first mistake, was that I chose a quote that was rather long, so it took my forever to trace and cut out every single letter. My second mistake, was the font set I chose. It's very cute, but for a project like this I would advise you to use a thicker font so it shows up easier and is easier to cute out.

Cut out all the letters, adhere them to your cutout cardboard. See how thin my lettering is? Not good. Thick letters = way better. You live and learn. By the way the quote says "there was once a little girl who was a queen. well, she wasn't really, but she believed it and so she was." I love that message. You are who you believe you are.

Spray paint! Problem #3: I left it out to dry on my back patio....and it started to rain :( This definitely affected it so make sure you can spray and let it dry somewhere that it's not gonna come in contact with mother nature! If you look closely you can even see the rain drops :(

Once it dries, remove the letters and it should leave a stenciled-type mark on the cardboard. You can see with mine, the rain seeped through and spread the spray paint into the letter regions. If you look at the R in girl, you can see a perfect example of an untouched letter and it looks really nice. Unfortunately that's about the only letter that wasn't really affected by the rain. Anyway after I removed the letters, I slipped the cardboard into the other half of the box so it turned into a shadow box effect thing. You can also spray paint the outside of the box but I didn't because my spray paint was running out

As you can see, it looks messed up, because it is. I still put it up on my wall thought because it took me FOREVERRR and I wasn't about to just throw it away. Plus, I think it has some character with that weather-beaten look :D

FAIL!!!! ----> DIY edition

So this past week I've been trying to do a lot of DIY projects. For myself and my bff who's bday is coming up.
And you know what? I failed. Miserably.
.
I have no idea why but everything I touch this week doesn't seem to turn out right. So I decided since I can't give out a good tutorial, why don't I just show you my failed attempts at life.

The first headband that I've ever made (I had to hand sew it too cause idk how to work the sewing machine I have) initially started as a gift for the friend I mentioned above....but it just didn't go as expected. I liked it, but that's probably cuz I spent like two hours making it, although honestly I probably wouldn't ever wear it. I do like the flowers I made using this tutorial. I'll probably end up making a hair clip with a similar design.

My next (and most heartbreaking) DIY fail was my poor attempt to bleach my leggings. I was really inspired by Sequin Magazine's white/purple leggings and Maria's AMAZING cloud-like leggings (both are amazing bloggers by the way, you should check them out :D ) anyway, so I thought to myself, hey I have a pair of dark gray leggings that I hardly ever wear. Thinking that bleaching them would make them look like Maria's was a mistake. First, my leggings were a lot darker, almost black. Second, I combined both of the links above methods are used a sponge to bleach as well as wrapping rubber bands...which didn't do much but make some spots harder to reach. In the end it ended up looking like this:

Yaaaa.....orange....honestly, I don't HATE it but I have no idea how I could wear that out of the house. I would have taken a picture with it actually on me but I haven't rinsed the bleach out yet in hopes that leaving it in will turn it into a none orange-y color.

Ok, I'll be honest, I didn't ACTUALLY run in this race. But my mom did, and I played photographer for the day with a friend's amazing Canon. Because my camera sucks. Seriously. And after playing around with this Canon, I have no idea how I'll go back to it!

10 Spring Cleaning Tips

Ah, spring. My second favorite season (after summer, of course). Along with spring comes flowers, bright colors, and .... spring cleaning. Honestly, I'm not one for cleaning, my parents can definitely confirm that. I clean my room and then literally two days later its messy again. But I wanted to share some spring cleaning tips that I'm sure gonna be following. I haven't finished my spring cleaning, BUT I have started it.

1. Crank up the volume. I can not work in silence. ESPECIALLY when I'm cleaning. The best way for me to get my cleaning done is to put on loud high volume fast music. Before you know it you'll be moving as quick as the tempo in the beat.
2. Don't clean alone! Because really, everything is better when your doing it with someone else. It'll keep you on task, well...hopefully.

3. Re-Style. I think it's really important to re-style rooms every so often and spring cleaning is the perfect time for this. This past weekend I moved my desk and added a window shade (as seen above...ya it doesnt fit the whole window but I actually kinda prefer it that way) and added a few other little projects to my room. It really helps you visually if your not looking at the same thing 24/7. Re-vamping your room will freshen things up even if its just in your own eyes.

4. GO THROUGH EVERYTHING IN YOUR CLOSET. This is a really important one. I clean my closet out a lot, but not thoroughly. It may be hassle but you should really go through every single article of clothing you own. I often look in my closet when I'm cleaning and say, "Oh I'll totally wear that one day". FACT CHECK: if you have something sitting in your closet that you've only touched once or twice you should probably re-evaluate whether you really need it or not. Also try on items that you haven't worn in a while, they might not fit anymore! And you won't know till you actually put it on. There were some pieces in my closet that I know I would never wear, and there were some that made me come up with a whole new outfit I never thought of.

5. Keep your fabric! Going along with number four, if you don't wanna donate your clothes (which I honestly frequently don't want to, sorry Goodwill), stash your fabric!! There's tons of great DIY projects you can do with old fabric from old shirts. In the picture above I used extra fabric (from the same shirt I used to make my bow ring!) to make a DIY dry erase board from a basic picture frame.
6. Don't freak out. I know what its like to look at a messy room and panic at the thought of having to spend forever trying to clean it, which makes me want to put it off more. You don't have to do everything in one setting, although I find that easier. If your crunched for time, make a list of what areas to clean and when to them. It'll keep you organized and stress free.
7. Have a clothing swap. Get together with friends and trade your "junk". Like they say, one mans trash is another man's treasure. I did a variation of this. And by variation I mean I heckled my mom to clean out her massive closet and I just took everything she didn't want. That works too :D

8. Build up. Even though I'm a college student living at home, I still have to work with a small space and I use a lot of dorm room tips for my room at home. Use your wall space. It's there, might as well do some organize with it, ya? Today I was seriously searching for a way to organize the HALF of my necklaces that wouldn't find on my regular jewlery organizer. So I just stuck a hanger on the wall and put my necklaces on it :) Done!
9. SHHH. Keep things hidden. I like to think that I have many valuable things in my room. So one of the best DIY's (and one of the most time consuming - but worth it) was to make a secret hollow book. It's amazing. I did mine out of an old dictionary (because NO ONE in my house ever opens up a dictionary) and it hold my journal, money, and random secret things :]
10. Your not alone. This is probably the best tip about spring cleaning. Seriously, everyone is doing it. I like to think that the best thing about slaving to clean everything is the fact that other people as suffering just as much as me hahaha jk :] but seriously, other people have alot of junk. And that junk could be gold to you. Go to thrift stores, yard sales, garage sales, or any sort of thing like that during this season. Just this weekend my neighbor was trying to get rid of his daughters junk because she left for college. I thought, "why would I want some other girl's broken crap?" but you know what I got out of this super sweet deal? A gold locket, a black heart necklace, a bunch of rings, more necklaces, some bangles I will surely DIY, that window covering shown above, the picture frame shown above and two others, a semi-cute purse, and a backpack I probably wont ever wear but love the idea that it was free anyway :D ya! i totally cleaned out, and you can too!

three completed goals

It's safe to say that I love lists and I love goals. So last summer when I came across the day zero project I instantly wanted to do it. If you haven't heard about it, its a list of 101 things you want to do in the next 1001 days. 1001 days?!? Seems crazy right, but its actually a great amount of time to finish 101 goals. I started last June and I'm only 1/4 of the way through my goals, but I wanted to share some of the one's I finished here.

GOAL #29 - write down 100 inspirational quotes

This was one of my favorite goals because I love love love quotes, especially things that I can relate to. So I scoured the web to find 100 quotes that I love and printed them out. So now whenever I'm feeling down or need some advice I turn to that page.

GOAL #35- make a list of things that make you happy.

This is something everyone should do whether or not its part of a goal list or not. You learn a lot about yourself and its also a good way to make yourself happy if your stuck in a rut. Some of the things that make me happy? Really good salad, commercials that sing, people rapping about food, candid pictures, and having the wind blow on my face when I stick my head outside of window.

GOAL #24- make a time capsule.

For me, a time capsule is just a box that I keep under my bed. I put things in there that I don't want to forget or things for my to open up later. I know alot of people that email their future selves but instead of doing that I wrote myself a letter and put a random date years from now to open it. I've wrote a letter to self of things to remember about life, friends, and relationships. I've even taken one of those "about me" quizzes and answered everything as I currently am and hopefully I will be able to open that up years from now and see what I used to be like. It's a neat idea and I really love it :D

DIY hair tie bow ring

Ok this is my first ever DIY post so I hope it turns out alright! Its really really simple and something you can just throw on easily. I tried to take pictures of every step which was actually a lot harder then I imagined. Please excuse the image quality, I have a very very crappy camera.

Materials:
- small square piece of fabric
- even smaller rectangle piece of fabric
- needle/thread
- small elastic hair band

*** find a small stretchy hair band that you don't need. I have really thick hair so the hair tie showed below is too small for my hair but (when wrapped around once its a little loose but once I attached the bow I wrapped it around my finger twice) it fit on my finger.
1. get a square piece of fabric, you don't want it too big because it's gonna be a ring, so just eyeball it to see what size you think would be best. Since this was kind of a test run for this project I used fabric from an old shirt and didn't really cut it too well hahaha

2. fold the top and bottom evenly to the middle

3. fold the left and right sides to the middle so that it's a small square

4. grab the square from the middle and pinch it so it shapes into a bow

5. I put a pin to hold it in place, this is optional but helpful with a bow that's so small.

6. For this step I didn't sew the bow together to hold it in place, but you could. I'm not an experienced sewer so I just wrapped the thread around the middle tightly to keep it in place. (sorry the picture for this one is kinda hard to see)

7. get your small rectangluar fabric and fold it in half and sew the ends shut

8. wrap the fabric around the bow AND the hair tie, cut the excess fabric then sew the pieces together so that its wrapped around the bow and hair tie. It should be pretty firm.

p.s. - I realize that the blue hair tie/pink fabric isn't the most attractive combo but its all I had :D Hopefully yours will be a lot prettier!

monday inspiration

One of the great things about window shopping is that you get tons of ideas. I have a folder with tons of pictures of things to create and things I love. One day, I'll post a picture of my inspiration wall when it fills up. For now here's a few of the things that I get inspiration from:

1. lookbook.nu - who doesn't love lookbook? this a great place to find cute clothing inspiration and whenever I "can't find anything to wear" looking at this site helps me whip up an outfit.

2. forever21 - I know alot of people get their inspiration from sites like polyvore.com but I can't visualize clothes without seeing them actually on someone, so forever21's "shop by outfit" section is my haven. It's updated fairly often and has cute wear-able outfits.

3. headbands! - I used to hate headbands, now their my go-to DIY projects. There so easy to make and cheap. So now a good majority of my internet time is spend looking for headbands to recreate.

4. quotable pictures - I love pictures that give you inspiration, not only for crafts or fashion, but for life. There are tons of images online that are go-to pick me uppers. Save a handful of these on your computer and they can instantly put a smile on your face.

5. other blogs- i get the majority of my inspiration from other blogs. There's soooo many great blogs out there that i really admire, like yesandyes and lovemaegan. find great blogs add them to your google reader and enjoy :D
